Millet House Artist Call- “Imagine: What Keeps Us From Unity”

In honor of the life and work of The Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Millet House Art Gallery and Community Space welcomes artists to explore the theme, “Imagine: What Keeps Us From Unity”. The life’s work of Dr. King was to end segregation, build unity and equality for all mankind. He did this by exposing the barriers and bondages that keep us divided as well as offering bridges for humanity to come together.Artists are asked to enter work that is an interpretation of the call in any medium or artistic expression.  This includes but is not limited to: visual artists, actors, dancers, singers, poets, comedians, etc. All are welcomed.   This will be ONLINE ONLY experience. Please be advised of the offerings and requirements below.

3 – 5 Artists will be offered a stipend and the opportunity to advertise during the exhibition to expand their platform. There are 3 requirements:

#1 Artists must be able to pre-record and send in a 30-minute presentation of their work on this theme.
#2 Artists must participate in a Zoom artists’ discussion panel on the date to be determined.

#3 Artists must sign a photo/video release and consent forms.  Artists will in no way lose their intellectual property rights.Failure to do all three will result in the loss of stipend and advertisement.

Millet House will be celebrating the unity that Dr. King dreamed of and that we all desperately need. We hope and know that this exhibition will be an extravagant display of the continuance of that dream with the aid of talented artists during challenging times!

Social media attention will be focused on this exhibition for 1month.

Call for Art: “Celebrate”

The theme is “Celebrate” because, as we emerge from the darkness of 2020 into who-knows-what, we might as well think positive and celebrate. As usual we took the decision to the artists, who brainstormed the following prompts/interpretations for your possible use:

Hope

Renewal

Sacred

Journey

Fortitude

Resolute

Reconnect

Transformation

New Beginnings

Joy

“Celebrate” will run through January 2021. An Opening Reception on Zoom will take place on December 4, the first Friday of the month.

Please submit by November 22. As with the other two shows in this series, to apply just send a good photo of the work suitable for online viewing. This time, please use our special Submission email address, submitmhg@gmail.com. We will send you the contract: please complete the contract as early as possible.

This is our third show in a series of three 2020 online shows. We’ve learned a lot, and hope to continue having an online version for our shows even when our real-world gallery opens again in 2021

And, as always this strange year, if an artist just cannot think of anything to celebrate, they can make that statement in art as well and we will uphold it for them.

Gift Shop

We are planning an online Gift Shop that will open alongside the “Celebrate” show. People out there are thirsty for art, we’ve noticed, but they also will be looking for small gifts. Our real-world in-house gallery Gift Shop has had macrame projects; prints; mobiles; tiny works of art; cards and envelopes; magnets – we could go on and on!

To apply for the Gift Shop, send a photo of the piece(s) asap (by Nov 15) to submitmhg@gmail.com, along with relevant information i.e. materials used and size. We will choose the works to offer. Make sure that you label the piece as being for the Gift Shop. And, once you receive the contract, please return as soon as possible.

Pricing

For our 2020 shows, knowing how many artists had events cancelled, we are taking a discounted commission of 20%, with 80% going to the Artist. (Normally the split is 30%-70%.)

Since the Gallery itself is closed, the artist will be shipping any work sold, from either the “Celebrate” show or the Gift Shop. Please factor this into your price, or tell us to mark your work “plus shipping.”

This Call for Art application does not commit The Millet House Gallery to enter into an agreement, to pay any costs incurred in the preparation of the proposal to this request or in subsequent negotiations or to produce any contract for the project referenced herein.

The Millet House Gallery reserves the right to reject any or all applications, reissue the application process, revise the project terms. While reasonable care will be taken, The Millet House Gallery is not responsible for loss or damage to materials included with applications.

Final Art Call

Our show asks this question: did you find a silver lining in the midst of the pandemic and the quarantine? Perhaps you found quiet time to paint, or grew closer to loved ones, or realized how important Nature is for you. Perhaps in slowing down you realized that life is better lived at a slower pace.
We understand that for some, there may be no silver lining as yet, and we invite you to make that statement also.

We will have three virtual rooms in the Silver Linings show, so choose one subtheme and send a photo of the work you are submitting in an email to themillethouse@gmail.com. We will respond with the online application.

The rooms:

Embrace the Weird (you may also choose to embrace something else)

Eye of the Storm

Masquerade/Maskerade

Please submit by September 24. Show runs online October 1-31.

Patricia writes, “The world of a circus has many layers. It is all at once whimsical, vibrant, exciting, dangerous, and dark. Performers in a circus wear makeup and masks to transform themselves into characters. Their characters are able to take their audience to different places. A tight rope walker balances on a thin wire, a trapeze artist flies, a clown makes us laugh at ourselves. In ways we can all relate to balance, flight, and laughter. The Millet House Gallery seeks the submission of artworks that explore the theme of Circus, to support the featured artist.
