Second Room: Eye of the Storm

As we prepare for our show, we sense a quieter time;

but what comes after the quiet?

Kay Johnson

In March of 2020, we entered what might be seen as a purifying storm, though perhaps not in the moment. Here, Kay Johnson has captured the storm in its beauty and terror; an energizing wave washes clean but warm tints threaten ominously.

Donna McNulty

Donna mentions two of many silver linings that she has experienced:
“To understand my situation you have to know that I am disabled by a physical disease, I moved from Colorado to Arizona for my health. I am an artist and I desire to participate with my art groups and with friends. Before Covid I was unable to attend most of these events.  Since the pandemic began there have been more Zoom meetings, online art shows, seminars and private meetings with friends than ever before. I have been able to see and share with my friends and fellow artist due to this change in how we reach each other. I have been in fun Zoom meetings with friends and artists in other states and other countries. I hope this will continue to be part of our access to each other when things change again.

Second, “I have found time to interact with the desert and the land during Covid in ways that I never could have before moving to Arizona.  My hands tell the tale in paint on the canvas of the desert around me.”

About this work, Donna adds: Abstract expressionism, influenced by my first experiences of the bright and hot sun of the Arizona summer. Three fully painted layers using acrylic glazing technique and others to allow all three to show. The layers: the bright colors the sun makes behind my closed eyelids, my first designed and unusable patio during the heat of day, and my patio in the cool night time with its small yellow light.

Kristine Boyer

Kristine writes, The storm strikes, illuminating the colors that each life preserves. Beauty exists within the eye of the soul, despite the disturbed darkness.  The eyes we see from a distance reflect shared worries during stormy times.  They contain our smiles and our frowns amidst the turmoil. Silver Lining: It’s time to look deeply into the ‘Stormy Eye’ of another.”

Brie Bartz

Brie explains, “Mighty and a little bit frightening storms come and go leaving trails of destruction and/rainbows of promise and a new day to come. While Braving the Storm you may feel discouraged or weak but remind yourself of what’s at the end…the dream turned reality and/or the pot filled with gold, rewarding you for all your blood sweat and tears throughout your life. “

” We are created throughout our lives by the challenges and obstacles we overcome! Through my art you will become your own warrior and be able to conquer any obstacles that stand in your way. With every brushstroke I take and splatter of paint or mark I make I release power and beauty. The canvas allows me to fully embrace the deepest parts of me and show it to the world around me.  It’s with art that my heart and soul truly came alive! I hope to always show the power in art and unique imagery behind each and every piece.”
