The Millet

You are invited! Closing reception for Synchronicity (at 60) will take place on August 25 (not August 24 as originally planned) and the Millet House will be open from noon to 10 pm on that date. The day will feature an interactive art project led by Jaime Glasser from 4 to 6 pm. The focus of the day will be on collecting YOUR ideas on how to bring about connected communities through art. Drop in any time after noon; wine, lemonade and snacks follow the art project, in a closing reception at 6 pm.

The Synchronicity exhibit showcases the work of Mesa artist Jaime Glasser, accompanied by Juried Artists and the Millet House Art Collective. Jaime conceives of her show as a way to embrace the simple joy of sharing her journey, as she turns sixty.

If you purchased art from this exhibit, you may pick it up at the reception, 6-10 pm; if you have art on exhibit, you may likewise take it home with you, or return on Sunday or Monday.

Andrea Rogers, juried supporting artist in the current Synchronicity show, offers a three-hour workshop on Shubui, the art of Japanese paper tie-dye! The workshop will be at the Millet House, August 18, 3-5 pm. Your donation of $25 covers materials, instruction, air conditioning and light snacks. Join artist Andrea Rogers for Shubui: tie-dyeing Japanese paper for use as collage in paintings, cards, borders on mats for framing, bookmarks, lampshades or any other creative products you may envision. The paper is extremely beautiful to see and glorious fun to design. Andrea Rogers has been working with tie dyed paper for over 4 years. Her paper/wood earrings are available at Visions Gallery in Chandler and at The Millet House in Mesa.

Below, examples of Shubui dry on a clothesline. The paper dries quickly and you will be able to take your creations home with you.

Lydia Quinones is featured artist in this exhibit. Her work here lies at the intersection of art and history; the exhibit features works of international connections and forgotten references of Native American history. Supporting artists include Liza Bell, Toni Copeland Miller, Jacob Bush, Craig Thornton, Tara Kosciukiewicz, Rebecca Murphy-Keith, Merced Maldonado, Sigrun Saemundsdottir, and Snorri Maldonado, all of whom created works that address the theme of East Meets West.

Closing reception for PROCESS art exhibit, December 8th (Friday), 6 pm to 9 pm.

The reception will be Sept 29, 6-9 pm at the Millet House, 440 W 1^st Street, in the Westside-Clark neighborhood of Mesa. Westside-Clark is celebrating our new local historic status with an exhibition of paintings by LaRee Merrill Johnson, who would have been 102 this year, and who raised her children in our neighborhood. Her son Merrill, who still lives in the family home in Westside Clark, has very kindly lent us 18 of her paintings to exhibit for one week. LaRee’s passion was to document the natural beauty she saw around her, before developers came in. If you are in the Phoenix area, you don’t want to miss this, and if you are an oldtimer, you may have stories to add. We have learned so much from the paintings: the fate of the confluence of the Verde and the Salt; the story of Sheep’s Crossing Bridge; the way that Pima cotton was developed and harvested.

The Desert Pathways Show continues through September 8th.
